They always say that breakfast is the most important meal of the day, but did you know that a healthy snack before school could actually help your kids stay happy and focused? Studies have found that children who eat a healthy breakfast tend to have better attendance records, achieve higher test results, and demonstrate a much better memory than their breakfast-skipping counterparts. If that wasn’t enough, a good breakfast can also help your children to maintain a healthy weight for their height.
So just what should we be serving up for breakfast? Contrary to popular belief, breakfast cereals aren’t always the best option. In fact, some cereals are filled with sugar, which can cause peaks and troughs in energy, leaving some children feeling tired and deflated by home time. The good news is that there are plenty of alternatives – there are loads of healthy pancake recipes for kids to try, and dozens of different ways to make even a piece of boring toast irresistible. - Pancake recipes for kids
We usually eat pancakes as a special treat, or topped with sugar and lemon on Shrove Tuesday, but there are some really healthy pancake recipes for kids that they can eat every single day if they want to! Cut the calories by skipping the flour entirely — all you need is a ripe banana and 2 medium eggs. Mush the banana with a fork and whisk in the eggs, then cook as you would a normal pancake, for a couple of minutes each side until cooked through. Get creative with the toppings — fresh berries are ideal.
- Breakfast smoothies & slushies
A regular fruit or vegetable smoothie might not quite satisfy your kid’s’ hunger when they first get out of bed in the morning, but a special breakfast smoothie will! Add two cups of your child’s favourite fruits (bananas and strawberries work well), 1 cup of milk (regular, soy, coconut, almond — whatever you like), and ½ cup of breakfast oats into a blender and mix until thick and smooth. If you have a slush machine at home, you could even crush up some ice and add it to the smoothie mix to make it extra cool and refreshing.

Buttered toast is a traditional breakfast food, but while it may have stood the test of time, it’s not the most exciting breakfast for our little ones. This is one of those instances where a little creativity can go a long way – there are so many things you can top a piece of toast with to create a fresh, bold breakfast that your kids will love. If you’re looking for some toast topping inspiration, then how about some cream cheese and fresh berries? Or sliced banana and a drizzle of honey?
